Rickie Fowler returned to the golf course this week with two major changes in his bag as he looks to finish 2024 on a high.
The Californian is participating in the Sanderson Farms Championship and opened with promising rounds of 69 and 67 to sit just outside the top 30 mark in the middle.
Fowler, playing for the first time since cutting the Open Championship (71st), heads to Mississippi with changes at both ends of his purse.
Speaking before the event, he revealed that he will be going with a new putter.
“I had a little extra time so I could do some testing with the LAB putter and I saw a lot of good things about it,” Fowler said.
“I liked what I saw at home, so I gave it a try this week. Hopefully, we will continue to see good things. DF3, big, not the biggest.
Small driver change
“Other than that, there was a little driver from TaylorMade so he replaced the 3-wood. I feel like it's a very beneficial thing for the game, especially on a golf course like this, so I've seen, again, a lot of positive benefits from it.
“A lot of times with new machines, a lot of times everyone out there doesn't try new things or put things in if they don't benefit or improve on what's out there.
“Yeah, in the end we're all trying to get better, like me, and see if there aren't little things we can put together to keep moving forward.”
Fowler also has some new-looking irons, though he said the change is for the better.
“They are the black version of the Cobra King Tours I used to play, just a different color. I thought they looked better. Put those right in.”
Fowler had top 20s at The Heritage (18th) in April and the Travelers Championship (20th) in June but has yet to post a top 10 this season.
He said: “I mean, luckily for me, since I won last year, I am safe from certain things, but there are things I will play for.
“Obviously, in order to win, I have to put myself in a better position, put myself back in a good place according to the World Ranking, and finally stay inside the Top 125, be in the PLAYERS.
“There's a lot we can play for you, but at the same time, it's not life or death.”
