NHL News: Jeremy Swayman Signs Nine-Year Extension in Boston

Bryan Hayes: “With Chris Johnson or TSN Hockey Insider. Therefore, Jeremy Swayman's contract is signed before the start of the new year. He doesn't lose a cent, does he? He gets his full no move, no trade, I believe, $23 million in signing bonus or whatever, but $8.25 a year. So he's under Hellebuyck, and I'd say that's a win for the Bruins.

As likely as not, it seemed to me that the Bruins held their own and, at the last second, gave him 250 more a year, whatever it was, and forced him to make the call. And he called, and he decided, I really don't want to miss the time.

How do you read that conversation? Who won, who lost? And beyond that, how long do you think it will take him to get in game shape and start producing for the Bruins?”

Chris Johnston: “Well, I belonged to the camp. I thought it was a slight win for Swayman. Maybe it's not final. But you know, part of Cam Neely's quote is $64 million reasons to be in camp, and we ended up with $66 million reasons to sign before opening night.

And so the Bruins had to stretch, I think, past where they wanted to go. You know, but the truth is, it's included. The deck is stacked against you as a player. If you were to miss days of the season, you would lose money that you will never get back, and in Swayman's case, to make this contract $43,000 a day, that is what he has been giving up. the day he missed it, unsigned. And then, you know, maybe in the end, it was just a matter of him taking the gift that the Bruins received over those eight years, eight times eight, up to 66 million and he decided it was time to call it quits.

But you know, I think you did yourself a favor by taking them to the 11th hour. And, you know, ultimately, getting the kind of deal that I think he can live with will be good for his family. And, look, it removes any of this guy's obviously playing with a chip on his shoulder. It was a big part of his story. It appeared, it appeared in an unknown place in Alaska and it was a low choice. Even his college team didn't give him a chance. Then the Bruins took him.

He ended up mediating last summer. I mean, he's got security like he's never had before, so, you know, it's hard for me not to think that he ended up on the good end of this. And, you know, the Noodles question is probably there for you to answer. I don't know what it will take for him to wake up fast. I mean, he was skating with Boston University there and going through his reps. But really, that's nowhere near as competitive as NHL training camp or preseason games or things like that.”

Jamie McLennan: “I think it's going to take a few weeks as they, you know, Korpisalo can start some games and get him into the season. He has to practice with the team, with the goalkeeper coach, all that. He just gets used to the team.”
