NHL rumors: Colorado Avalanche, New York Rangers, and four UFAs
The Colorado Avalanche could have an inside edge in Mikko Rantanen
TSN: Pierre LeBrun doesn't see Mikko Rantanen's extension with Colorado as imminent. Rantanen has the same agent as Leon Draisaitl, who signed a $14 million extension with the Oilers. Avalance may have an internal limit.
“Let's not forget, Nathan MacKinnon at $12.6 million a year may be the internal cap for Colorado, so this should be done, but I will tell you that not everyone knows for sure that it will happen. It will be fun.”
NHL Rumors: Rangers, Kraken, Maple Leafs, Panthers, Islanders, Golden Knights, Ducks, and Wild
Two New York Rangers UFAs are pending
Dan Rosen of NHL.com: (mailbag) New York Rangers defenseman Ryan Lindgren signed a one-year, $4.5 million deal and will be a UFA after the season. The Rangers will need to decide if they want to make a long-term commitment to Lindgren. He plays a tough game and he plays with a lot of injuries and pain. Only signing him to a one-year deal and taking him to a UFA would give you the impression that they are thinking the way they are thinking.
TSN: Darren Dreger said Igor Shesterkin was a little upset that some contract details were leaked earlier this week.
“Guys, there are those who believe that this guy is very serious about his position, and the industry is between $11.5-11.7, $11.7 would make him the highest paid Ranger, and that doesn't matter.
He'll stay in the crease, stop the puck, and if the New York Rangers find the right spot, he'll be happy to sign. “
Four veterans are still looking for work
TSN: Chris Johnston notes that there are four veteran defensemen still looking for an NHL spot.
John Klingberg is still working his way back from double hip surgery and has a few months to go.
Kevin Shattenkirk has spoken to some teams and hopes to have something soon.
Mark Giordano is hoping for one more year in a Cup contender and in a deeper role.
NHL Rumors: The NHL Goalie Market Is Changing
Justin Schultz had a great year in Seattle last season. He has turned down other NHL jobs and may head to Europe if he doesn't find the right fit.
