Pro takes 'global break' after animal verdict
PGA Tour Live
Michael Kim, after going to prison, released himself through the hole of “criticism”.
Only in golf, right?
“It's like finding a needle in a haystack,” says announcer Mark Immelman.
Finally, Kim ho-hum split the Black Desert Resort par-5 18th hole. But in the 20 or so minutes before that in Thursday's first round of the Black Desert Championship, there was a flurry of activity, including:
— A break. Kim dropped his first shot into the lava rocks and vegetation on the left side of the fairway, repeated himself on his temporary ball – only to miraculously land one ball between the various rocks and vegetation.
Still, there were problems.
His ball was in the downfield. Can he swing at his ball? Probably not. An unplayable false free would probably be a game, and a one-shot penalty would be taken.
— Thought. Was the above just your procrastination? It is possible.
Or was an animal created? It is possible. If that's the case, Kim would get relief from the emergency rule — without being held to account. He called the officer.
“I feel like there's almost half the field [who] I wouldn't even think of doing that,” said analyst Matt Every on PGA Tour Live radio.
— Telephone. A law enforcement officer arrived. He investigated, before contacting another officer via walkie-talkie for guidance.
Portions of the interview were taken from the PGA Tour Live microphone:
The officer at the scene said: “Hey, you obviously know more about this place.” I think we have some critics wandering around this desert. … Some kind of animal burrows around these trees.”
Said the officer on the other end of the walkie-talkie: “Yes, we have…”
An officer at the scene said: “Yes, when I stick my finger, it just goes under.” There must be some kind of animal den, I think.”
– Decision. The adjournment was decided as a pit for animals, and relief was granted without penalty.
Said Immelman on PGA Tour Live: “This is a huge blessing.”
Wonke said: “Of course it is. Welcome to the rules of golf, folks. You can drive it down the middle of the fairway in a divot and get no relief, then drive it to prison – a real prison – and get a free fall. What a game.”
Said Immelman: “I think it opens the case for knowing the rules.”
– Ball placement. After the decision, the stones were cleared, Kim was able to place his ball after attempts to throw it did not work.
He said Everyone on the PGA Tour Live program said: “It's a shame though that this official doesn't have tea so we can just make him for him, and then get out of there. I'm just kidding.”
Said Immelman: “No, you're not.”
Wonke said: “I mean, this is a global break. It really is.”
Said Immelman: “If he makes four here, that's like daylight robbery.”
Everyone said: “It's a global thing because his time also went into the forest. I mean, we might be saving four shots here, it feels like. “
– Laughter and posts. After landing, Kim hit the iron to the fairway, then hit the iron to 12 feet. Can he make a bird? He didn't, even though his ball touched the right edge of the hole on the putt, he waved, before covering his face and laughing.
Without a doubt, Kim knew what had gone down.
Said Immelman on PGA Tour Live radio: “I think, at the end, after hitting two shots into the mud down the left, if you had told him, hey, you can have five, he would have run to the green.”
Wonke said: “He wanted to do that [birdie putt] so that he can write about it [on social media].”
Remarkably, Kim did. After birdying the 18th and finishing with a three-under 68, he wrote:
“I am on my way to buy a lotto ticket…. I have a break today!”
