Below, in this article about Sunday's times “2024 Black Desert Championship: Round 4 pairings,” are the times for the 2024 Black Desert Championship Sunday: Round 4 of 69 golfers – but they are not complete. One of the main players is missing from the list.
It will be there from the opening bell to the final whistle, though. It won't hit a shot, but it will probably hit golf balls.
We're talking about the lava rocks that are scattered throughout the Black Desert Resort, of course, and you can be sure that with the course's beauty they'll be on the minds of everyone trying to take home the top prize. They got some screen time in Thursday's first round, when Michael Kim double-bogeyed them on the 18th hole, before running away from trouble. They reappeared in Saturday's third round, when the players were forced to take penalties, as their intensity made strokes impossible. All week, they have been a topic of concern.
Patrick Fishburn said before the tournament: “It's a unique sight and I'm not sure I've ever played another course with black rock all around and the desert in the background.
Said Zac Blair before the tournament: “I think lava rock is what it is and it's not dangerous, it's a loose ball, it's not like anything else. So the kind of places you can go and you can be dangerous, or you can go to Arizona and hit it in the desert and you can still find it and get it out. Here, you won't find much time. Especially on rocks. So I think it's very, very different. People are the type to see and learn for the first time. But there is a lot of playing field out there. It's not like it's super tight all over the place. They gave us plenty of space to hit the driver with anything but tea. I just have to keep it off the rocks.”
Nick Taylor said before the tournament: “The lava rock is coming slowly. I actually think most guys will play lava rock without limits. There are very few cases that I think you'll be able to make unplayable or I don't think you'll be able to play it very often.”
After the second round Harris English said: “Yeah, it's unlike anything I've ever seen, especially with the black stone and mud.”
Said Kevin Streelman after the third round: “You can't outrun yourself.” These lava rocks are like – you know, it's just at the end of the hole when you hit it there.”
They will no doubt feature again in Sunday's final round, where Matt McCarty will start from the lead, and Streelman, Englishmen, Jos Highsmith and Stephan Jaeger are tied for second, two shots back. Sunday TV coverage begins at 5pm on the Golf Channel.
