WATCH: What are the four things you can choose if you say football is unplayable? The rules explained

The rules of golf can be a bit confusing but this USGA video simplifies the options available when you find your ball but declare it unplayable.

Simply put: you have three well-known – and least well-known – things.

“If you're in a position where you can't or don't want to play your ball as it lies, consider getting comfortable,” the video says.

“The clearance of an unplayable ball can be done anywhere on the field except when your ball is in the penalty area where local law applies.

“If you decide to go free, you have three options, but they all come with one penalty.

“The first option is side and distance, which means you go back to where you last played.

“The second thing is to think of a straight line from the hole through the center of your ball, and then throw to that line behind it. Your ball can roll up to one club length in any direction from where it first hit the green, including forward.

“The third is to drop anywhere between two clubs the length of your ball, not close to the hole.

Bunker options

“In the basement you have the same three options to help, all for one penalty.

“The only difference is that you have to stay inside the clubhouse if you use the two-club length or the back-of-the-line option.

“However, there is a fourth method that only works if you decide that your ball is unplayable in the basement.

“It allows you to get out of the bunker by going back to the lane as much as you like and it comes with two penalties.”
