Five-year-old Ping G410 fairway wood helps McCarty reach Augusta

Matt McCarty is the latest player to step into The Masters after a whirlwind year.

The left-hander started 2024 on the Korn Ferry Tour and went on to win three times to earn Three Promotions on the PGA Tour.

He is now a winner on the PGA Tour major after a three-shot victory at the Black Desert Championship.

The 26-year-old opened with a 62, followed by rounds of 68 and 64, closing with a 4-under 67 aided by an eagle on the 310-yard par-14.

There's a lot to like about his Ping bag setup but the standout club is probably his five-year-old fairway wood.

McCarty still uses a Ping G410 3-wood that produced a key shot on the 14th.

Reportedly, Ping tour players found that the previous G400 fairway created too much spin for the center of gravity to be lowered but, with the new adjustable fairway, there was an increase in loft distance to +/- 1.5°, and three options it's a flat lie, and McCarty is still a big fan of the band.

“I've had this thing for a while – it's probably one of the last 410 years we've had, I hope this thing goes on for a while,” McCarty said.

“I don't like to change 3-woods too much. I feel like if you find something, I feel like it's a unique club. Just go with what you want.”

The rest of his bag is pretty standard with a Ping G430 LST driver and G430 Max 7-wood while he has Ping Blueprint S irons and Glide Forged Pro wedges.

On his sides he has 'Butter Fingers' stamped on a 50˚ wedge to remind him of a strange incident earlier this year.

“I got 'Butter Fingers' stamped on my 50-degree. I dropped my club on the ball, I got a penalty shot at the Korn Ferry event in Sarasota this summer, so a friend of mine thought it would be funny to put 'Butter Fingers' on it, so there we are, I haven't dropped it since, I think that's good mojo. “

His putter is a custom Ping PLD Tyne center-shafted mallet.

“This thing is good. I have a PLD, I have some rust on it, it adds some character. This has been great. Switching to a center shaft about three years ago, I went through a few different putters, but the weight of this one and the feel of the deep milled face is a little soft….

As for the run that got him as high as 47th in the world, McCarty is still tight-fisted.

“I don't know how you can expect this thing. It's just delicious. I was working really hard. This year has been good for me. Getting out here early, getting the experience was good and this is obvious now. It's been a few months for me.”
