Akshay Bhatia is one of my favorite young players, the 22-year-old has really come on in the last two seasons and is emerging as a new face on the PGA Tour.
With eight combined T10 finishes (including two PGA Tour victories), Bhatia has quickly become a fan favorite with his passionate appreciation and limitless golfing talents, making him a joy to watch whenever he plays.
Given his skills, I figured it would be wise to steal some short game tips, where Bhatia recently shared some tips for hitting a low, spinny shot on Callaway Golf's YouTube channel – which you can check out below.

As any golfer knows, shots out to 30 yards can be … challenging. Not only do you need to choose the right club for this type of shot, but you need to understand some basic fundamentals to use it to perfection.
If you mess up your club selection or execution, you run the risk of adding unnecessary strokes to your scorecard. To add more pressure to the distance situation, players often argue about which type of shot works best from 30 yards out.
But Bhatia will help, and he says the first step to hitting a low-flying, pink shot is reading lies and understanding the situation.
“Many people want to know how to throw [a 30-yard pitch shot],” he said. “Overall, we need to be in the right position to hit this shot.”

This means having the golf ball on the fairway or first cut, most of it visible rather than buried in the rough.
After analyzing the lies, Bhatia says it's time to pull out the gun, explaining his plan.
“I like to open my face, I am [play the ball] I go back a little in my position, then drive forward with my body and keep the handle forward,” explained Bhatia. “You're not trying to add any kind of loft to the picture.”
Bhatia then talks about the angle of attack, which he describes as the “slight movement” that comes from impact.
“It doesn't have to be fancy, but it's cut enough that you can hit a low spinner, drive it,” he adds.
So if you're looking to improve your short game and want to try something creative with the wedge, start by using some of Bhatia's suggestions above. Although it will take a while to get comfortable with it, eventually, you'll be able to nail those tricky 30-yard shots to give yourself an advantage in the putt.
