NHL News: New York Rangers, Alexis Lafreniere Ends Extension
The New York Rangers and forward Alexis Lafreniere have finalized a seven-year contract extension worth $7.45 million.
Vince Z. Mercogliano of Lohud: Lafreniere's contract will expire when he turns 30, and he will have the opportunity to earn another big contract.
In the last five years of the contract, he is expected to have a list of eight teams that will not be traded.
The Rangers currently have about $25 million in cap space and still need to re-sign K'Andre Miller and Igor Shesterkin. They need to fill out their roster with 7 or 8 more players after the signings of Miller and Shesterkin.
Thoughts from the media
Frank Seravalli: “The price of reaching the 8th year, and buying out one more year of the UFA, would have put AAV in a position that the Rangers cannot reach now.”
Marco D'Amico: “You have to wonder what that eighth year would have done at AAV. It's a good deal though for both parties.”
Josh Yohe: “It strikes me as a good deal for the Rangers.”
Zach Laing: “Man, what a good thing about the guards here. Lafreniere has really come into his own in the last 12 months.”
#My Model still stupidly stubborn about Lafrenière's breakout, but here's the chart anyway!
Laf only needs to average a +5 Total Rating to qualify and was at that level last year. Once he starts getting PP1 time, he will shoot above this projection. pic.twitter.com/HIW5FoaH4A
