Spanish resort Camiral to host 2031 Ryder Cup – Golf News

Spain will host the Ryder Cup for the second time in the history of the annual event after it emerged that Camiral Golf & Wellness, the Costa Brava resort formerly known as PGA Catalunya, has been selected to host the event in 2031.

Although an official announcement is expected in the next few days, sources have confirmed that the venue, which has hosted many European Tour events over the years, including the Final Qualifying School, is the preferred venue for the event in seven years.

The resort, 10 miles from the city of Girona on Spain's northeast coast, was originally built to host the 1997 Ryder Cup before construction delays meant the event had to be moved to Valderrama.

Camiral has all the golf and hospitality infrastructure to host the Ryder Cup

Opened in 1999 as PGA Catalunya, the top resort has two 18-hole championship courses, a golf course and a tour course, and it is understood that the 2031 Ryder Cup will be played on a composite course combining the two. This was the preferred option for building the third study.

One of the losing bidders for the 2023 Ryder Cup, which went to Marco Simone in Rome, Camiral is owned by Irish businessman Denis O'Brien, who bought the property in 2007 and has invested several million euros in improving the facilities, a new hotel, restaurants, spa , and the development of residential buildings.

It changed its name to Camiral Golf & Wellness in 2022 as part of a post-Covid move to rebrand the resort as an all-inclusive wellness destination, with an upgraded spa, walking trails, pilates studios, a cryotherapy room and other health-focused amenities. resources.

Spain's win is England's loss, and bids from Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire and London Golf Club in Kent, as well as the to-be-built Hulton Park in Bolton, have been stacked in favor of the Catalan site, meaning it will be built. it will be at least 11 years before the Ryder Cup returns to UK shores in 2035.
