Six reasons why we love (and hate) fall golf

For some golfers spring is the best time to play 18 holes. The Masters are usually quick to get out there.
For many, summer can never be beaten – the best weather, the best conditions, the full value of every shot.
Not many golfers would say winter is their favorite season but fall is often unfairly maligned.
Let's take a look at six reasons why we love playing golf in what our American friends call the Fall.
The leaves
This is the time when the golden leaves turn the trees into a festival of colors.
Red, orange, yellow and brown.
They look good on the trees, not bad on the ground and float well between the two.
There is also a problem, of course.
Finding your ball under those leaves can be a real pain and is there anything worse than hitting the middle of the fairway and never finding the ball because it's hidden by fallen leaves?
The golden sun
There is only one thing better than all those wonderful colors – the impressive sun that shines and brings out the golden color on the beautiful and green streets.
Unfortunately there is another problem.
That sunlight is often very low.
So low that looking at it can make it very difficult to see where your ball has gone.
Swings and spins.
Prices are low
With colder temperatures and less sunshine, and a poor number of fair-weather golfers, clubs and courses need to increase fall footfall.
And that means the potential for some great deals.
It's a great time to start digging for great deals on links courses that may be out of your price bracket during high season.
Silent lessons
Your home club may not be as busy as usual, like others you may want to visit.
That's a bonus because it means that even though there are only a few hours in the day, you'll probably get to the course much faster.
Finding layers
Some golfers love nothing more than to pull on their shorts.
But some prefer cold mornings.
Not just one golf glove but two mittens.
A nice warm under-shirt.
Favorite jumper.
A fur hat.
Maybe even a scarf.
You can't beat a cold wrap.
Cozy clubhouse
And after a round of nippy (in both senses of the word – slightly cold and nice and fast) there is nothing better than hitting the cozy clubhouse.
A bowl of soup.
A few rounds of toast.
And then another nip – this whiskey time perhaps.
It's complete.
