How to Plan the Ultimate Mountain Biking Holiday at Thredbo MTB Park

Whether you're planning a family trip during the school holidays, a long weekend ride with your mate or a solo adventure, Thredbo MTB Park is the ultimate mountain bike destination.

It's Australia's only lift-accessible MTB Park and there's something really special about hopping on a chairlift or gondola with your bike, enjoying the spectacular views on the way up the mountain and riding back down. Plus, the elevators are super fast, comfortable and efficient which means you can get more riding time each day!

Not only are there more than 40 kilometers of gravity trails for all abilities but you are also surrounded by the beauty of Mount Kosciuszko! Between laps, be sure to stop and breathe in the fresh mountain air, smell the wildflowers and cool off by the waterfalls.

Thredbo makes significant improvements to the MTB Park every year to ensure that every season is better than the last, and this summer is no different! This season, riders can enjoy the new Revolver route from the Kosciuszko Chairlift, the new jump route from the Cruiser area and a number of improvements to the existing network including a major redesign of the Kosciuszko Flow Trail on the lower slopes, a new section added to the Dream Catcher ( which was All-Mountain) and a redesign of the Grasshopper with more flow and jump.

To really experience Thredbo MTB Park, you will need at least a few days! Here's everything you need to know when planning your trip…

Getting There

Thredbo is located in the heart of Kosciuszko National Park in the Snowy Mountains, NSW and is easily accessible by car or bus. About 5.5 hours drive from Sydney or Melbourne and 2.5 hours drive from Canberra, Thredbo offers both day and overnight car parks.

When You Arrive

When you arrive, you'll need a few things!

The first is a lift pass to access the trails. After shopping, go to one of the kiosks at the bottom of the mountain to pick up your MyThredbo card. Our tip? Be sure to buy your lift passes online at least 7 days in advance to get up to 30% off adults and up to 50% off children's lift passes.

If you plan to spend more than 6 days on the mountain, check out our new Gravity Pass, it gives you unlimited access from November 16th to April 27th, membership to the resort, discounted food and drinks and discounted entry to the Cannonball festival!

Next is the bike and gear. Never fear if you don't own one yet! Thredbo Retail & Rental offers you a huge range of the latest gravity gear for purchase or hire.

Hot tip: It's very easy to load your bike on the gondola or chairlift but if it's your first time, you'll find display racks under every lift where you can practice! In addition, the friendly shipping staff are always happy to help you as well.

First Methods

Thredbo is home to some of the best alpine riding in the country with over 40km of gravity trails, progressive skill parks, jump parks and two pump tracks. There is something for everyone!

When you're ready to go, check out the interactive map in the Thredbo app to choose your first trail. Starting with the green Easy Rider trail for beginners and taking you to the dark Cannonball Downhill trail for advanced riders, Thredbo's trail map is designed to be developed as you build skills and confidence. Just check the progression matrix on the map and follow the paths from the easiest to the most challenging!

For beginners and intermediate riders, hop on the Merritts Gondola and head to the Cruiser area on the first day. The Cruiser area has some of the most popular rides in the park including the Paparazzi, Pegasus & Grasshopper. Paparazzi has become a favorite among riders because of its scenic and slightly challenging terrain. True to its name, it has great photo opportunities! From the Cruiser area, you can also access some of the best trails in the park including Ricochet & Sidewinder which will take you all the way back to the village.

Advanced riders, you'll find more challenging terrain from the Kosciuszko Chairlift where the famous Cannonball Downhill takes center stage. The Cannonball track follows a straight drop line that goes up to the chairlift multiple times through high-speed rock gardens, big jumps and steep terrain. For those looking for something gentler, the Kosciuszko Flow Trail offers an adrenaline rush of high-speed gravity, yet is an accessible intermediate route with no technical sections. New this summer is the Revolver, a steep and fast roller coaster with big rock rolls and jumps that will keep riders on their toes.

For those looking for more of a backcountry adventure, the Panorama is a black tech line that cuts through the main range to the Gunbarrel & Cruiser areas. Panorama has some technical rock sections and advanced features with side views along the way.
