Argument mars Lin Yu-Ting's semi-final victory over Esra Yildiz Kahraman

Taiwan's Lin Yu-Ting is through to the women's 57kg final on Saturday after winning her semi-final last night against Turkey's Esra Yildiz Kahraman.

Lin will now face Poland's Julia Szeremeta after defeating Filipino star Nesthy Petecio 4-1.

The 28-year-old never did anything wrong on his way to the final and proved to Kahraman that he was a class above by not losing a single point. Lin's performance and progress have been overshadowed after he entered the gender classification as he failed a gender eligibility test at a tournament in India last year.

Lin and Algeria's Imane Khelif – who will fight for gold with China's Yang Liu in the 66kg final tomorrow (August 9) – faced a barrage of abuse and criticism for their participation.

A battered Kahraman caused a stir afterwards when he gestured to the crowd and crossed his fingers. This was followed by another “X” action by Lin who was playing against quarter finalist Svetlana Staneva who was also beaten.

The characteristic identified by Kahraman and Staneva is believed to refer to the XY chromosome, usually found in males, which Lin is suspected of having. At last year's Women's World Championships in New Delhi both Lin and Khelif tested positive for male XY chromosomes leading the IBA (International Boxing Association) to disqualify them from the event. However, the IOC (Independent Olympic Committee) recognizes these competitors as women.

Both Lin and Khelif were registered as female at birth and the latter have a passport as a female. Regardless of the results of both finals, the streak is likely to continue.
