Connor McDavid extended the lead on a pass from Broberg in the defensive zone. The puck hit the best player in the world in the middle, and he made no mistake, going five holes past the Blues netminder. The Oilers appeared to score again, but the official's quick whistle denied the goal, so it remained 2-0 Oilers.
Zach Hyman added one on the power play for the sixth time this season. McDavid got Hyman back at 14:37 of the second period. The Oilers had three goals on just 13 shots in 40 minutes.
The Blues didn't go away as Holloway put them on the board when he returned to Edmonton for the ninth time this season, 5:02 into the final frame. St. Louis cut it to within one on Jake Neighbors' power play goal 13:09 into the period. Jordan Kyrou's shot deflected off the visitors, past Stuart Skinner in the Edmonton net.
However, the Oilers regained their lead with two goals from Troy Stecher's first as an Oiler. This was a simple shot from the corner that found its way into the back of the net and Binnington would love to return. That goal killed any hope of a comeback, as Edmonton held on for a 4-2 victory.
Skinner was excellent in net for the Oilers, stopping 29 of 31 shots for a .935 save percentage (SV%). Binnington, on the other hand, wasn't great, making only 17 saves on 21 shots for a putrid .810 SV%.
Both teams are back in action on Tuesday night (Dec. 10). The Oilers welcome the Tampa Bay Lightning to Rogers Place, while the Blues travel to Vancouver to play the Canucks to complete their four-game Western Canadian tour.
