After losing to the United States in the Concacaf Nations League final in March, Mexico is determined to start its Copa America 2024 campaign and hunt for international glory.
When Mexico last competed in the Copa America, they lost 7-0 against the eventual winners, Chile, in the quarter-finals of the Copa América Centenario. El Tri was not included in the 2019 edition of the tournament, and only CONMEBOL teams competed in the final Copa America.
Copa America 2024, however, has six CONCACAF teams that have qualified for the tournament. Mexico booked their ticket to the United States with their good run in the CONCACAF Nations League, drawn in Group B along with Jamaica, Ecuador, and Venezuela.
But has El Tri ever won the Copa America in its 108 years of existence?
Mexico has no Copa America titles. In fact, no CONCACAF team has ever won this tournament; only eight CONMEBOL teams have lifted this historic trophy since the tournament began in 1916.
El Tri came close to claiming the final victory, however, finishing second in the 1993 and 2001 editions of the tournament. In their first Copa America final, Mexico lost 2-1 to Argentina after Batistuta scored the winner in the 74th minute.
Then eight years later, Mexico faced Colombia, losing 1-0 at the Estadio El Campín.
Although Mexico have not returned to the Copa America final since losing to Colombia, they are still the only non-South American team to have made it this far in the tournament. Although their last appearance is a consolation prize compared to adding a trophy to their cabinet, it is still a remarkable statistic.
Mexico has a chance to avenge its previous defeat this summer in Copa America 2024. El Tri starts its first match of the tournament against Jamaica on June 22.
