Dreger: “Well, there's never been a shortage of speculation about Mitch Marner and the Toronto Maple Leafs. I might question how much of that assumption works. How much of that information is accurate?

Here's what we know. We know there is ongoing discussion between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Marner camp, but remember the truth here. Mitch Marner has one year left on his contract. He is looking forward to playing that year for the Maple Leafs. He is looking forward to playing for new coach Craig Berube. Craig Berube is looking forward to coaching Mitch Marner.

But that doesn't mean Brad Treliving won't have trade talks for Mitch Marner. Marner manages the process without moving.

I can tell you for sure that Brad Treliving is very focused on bringing in at least one right fielder, maybe two if he can swing that deal. And obviously some depth to the goal as well. That's what he's focused on.”

NHL Rumors: Toronto Maple Leafs To Hold Extension Talks With Mitch Marner

Jonas Siegel and James Mirtle for The Athletic: If the Maple Leafs can get a trade to their liking, and Mitch Marner approves, a return could fill one or more roster holes. They will also be without an attacking midfielder.

According to what has been heard, after the Leafs talked to teams about Marner, they got the idea that it is not an easy thing to do.

The issues seem to be the teams Marner will play for, equal to his current $10.9 million cap hit, and having the assets (likely including an impact defenseman) the Leafs want. There are also potential extension talks if Marner agrees to a trade.
