Which teams are left in the quarterfinals of Euro 2024?

Many may view the group stages as the first rounds of the qualifiers. Last 16 ever Euro 2024 indeed we continued.

Now, that doesn't mean the round is delivered from an entertainment standpoint. Most of the matches were terrible, although Jude Bellingham and Cristiano Ronaldo's tears will be remembered forever.

The completion of the first round of the playoffs means that there are only eight teams left in the tournament. The smell of the Henri Delaunay Cup is getting stronger for those who are left, as the event of this competition in Berlin on July 14 is getting closer.

Switzerland have been consistently performing at major tournaments in recent times, but prospects heading into Euro 2024 have been bleak. Many suspected that the Swiss would struggle in Group A and not get beyond the round of 16 if they progressed.

Murat Yakin's side have instead emerged as one of the most impressive and impressive teams in Germany this summer. Yakin's tactical wrinkle made them very difficult to play against and they boast enough talent going forward to keep strong lines on their toes.

Switzerland brushed aside Hungary on Matchday 1, came up short against Germany to win Group A and made light work of hosts Italy in the round of 16. An uneven England awaits in the last eight.

It didn't take long for the host team to beat Scotland 5-1 to kick off the tournament. Germany have been busy since Florian Wirtz got the ball rolling on the opening night and although they haven't fared well in subsequent games, Julian Nageslmann's side are undeniably formidable.

The manager discussed with his team based on the opposition, Germany's options that he reserved help to advance to the knockouts as group winners. Niclas Fullkrug has scored twice from the bench, a fine match for the Swiss, while Jamal Musiala has arguably been the star of the tournament so far and currently sits top of the points table.

Musiala scored his third goal of Euro 2024 as Germany won 2-0 in the round of 16 against Denmark.

England fans have enjoyed around 10% of the action in Germany this summer, with the bulk of that 10% coming during their first win against Serbia.

Their victory on match day 1 was in the past, but the subsequent draws were a struggle. However, a five-point haul was enough to advance as winners in a poor Group C and their reward was a final against Slovakia.

England flirted with Euro 2016-esque humiliation for most of the game, falling behind 1-0 before half-time. Gareth Southgate once again struggled to find balance, even when he scored second-half changes, and was eventually dismissed by Jude Bellingham's acrobatic genius with a minute left on the clock to send the game into extra time.

Harry Kane's late goal has England in the last eight, but a host of questions still surround the Three Lions.

It really was night and day watching England struggle past Slovakia to Spain and finally Georgia on Sunday night.

Spain's tenacity and cohesion are in stark contrast to England's hold and they have been the dominant team in the tournament in four games.

Croatia and Italy were put to the sword by Luis de la Fuente's preferred starting XI before strong Albania lost to a Spanish side reserved for a group stage finish.

They had a shocker against opposition Georgia in the last 16, falling behind 1-0, but Spain created chances of their own against a heavy block that sent them out in the second half. This team can still control matches and confuse sides with sheer skill, but they also have the pace to threaten the counter and relentlessly pace their attack.

France were the same as England, but advanced from a tough Group D and have already eliminated Belgium in the round of 16.

Domenico Tedesco tried to get past the French in Dusseldorf but Didier Deschamps' side, as they often do, produced a much-needed moment to send them off. Randal Kolo Muani's deflected effort summed up what was a disappointing affair between two teams loaded with talent.

Some will say there is more to come from this French team, but this may be who they are.

Portugal's round of 16 was quite a game; Cristiano Ronaldo's show, to be exact.

Slovenia, as they faced England, were stubborn opponents and after a brilliant first half in which Portugal had success going in behind a strong defence, chances stalled until Diogo Jota won for his country – and Ronaldo – with a spa-kick. Jan Oblak's subsequent save brought a roar and it looked like the 39-year-old would make an infamous bow on the big stage.

Ronaldo has saved himself penalties, however, he converted his penalty, but the hero of Portugal in the round of 16 was the goalkeeper Diogo Costa. Before saving three penalties for Slovenia, Costa made a great save in extra time to deny Benjamin Sesko in a face-off.

Like many big nations, Portugal have struggled to play well at Euro 2024. Roberto Martinez has yet to find the perfect balance and their quarter-final against France, despite the abundance of talent, could be a tough watch.

Ronald Koeman has had a difficult campaign, but the Netherlands are in the quarter-finals following their win over Romania.

The Dutch struggled in the group stage but showed promise on Matchday 2 against France. Austria's defeat on Matchday 3 dropped them to third place in Group D, but their last 16 win saw hope for Oranje's hopes.

A victorious quarter-final against Turkey awaits them in Berlin.

Congratulations to those of you who cashed in on your dark horse in Turkey this summer. They finally brought them.

Turkey have struggled at major tournaments since their impressive Euro 2008 campaign, falling flat at Euro 2020, in particular. And while Vincenzo Montella's side are flawed, they have a host of exciting star forwards who have proved key to their successful campaign so far.

Their win over Austria was perhaps the highlight of the Last 16, with Montella's side having previously beaten Georgia in the all-time showdown and Czechia progressing from Group F as runners-up.
