“Too many mistakes…” – The BBC man criticizes the Tottenham man, saying he can't get on Ange's show

Tottenham are targeting the exit of defender Emerson Royal, who is reportedly set to join AC Milan.

Former Spurs defender Alan Hutton has commented on the situation, indicating that the club may want to strengthen their defence.

Emerson appears set to leave North London, with personal terms reportedly agreed over a move to Italy. The expected deal includes a five-year contract worth €3 million (£2.5m) per year.

Tottenham, who first invested £25 million in Emerson when they signed him from Barcelona in the summer of 2021, are now aiming to recoup the same amount. However, Milan are looking to complete the transfer for around £15.

Emerson found it challenging to defend first place under new manager Ange Postecoglou after losing his place to Pedro Porro. Last season, he played 22 Premier League games, starting just 11 of those games.

The 25-year-old's form has been inconsistent, with Hutton noting that while Emerson has shown strength as an attacking full-back, he has not always reached the high level required.

Alan Hutton says Royal can't play on Ange's schedule

Hutton believes Pedro Porro will remain Postecoglou's choice at right-back. However, he also admits that Tottenham may be in the market for reinforcements to replace Emerson as a back-up option.

The need for a reliable defender who can integrate seamlessly into Postecoglou's tactical setup is evident, and the club is expected to seek such a player in the transfer market.

Speaking to Tottenham News, Hutton said:

“They have Porro to play in.

“I'm with Emerson Royal, I've said before that when he first came in I really liked the way he looked, he looked like an attacking defender and he's going to fit into Ange's style of play to some extent, but I don't. I think he can really get on the field.

“But I think I've seen enough of him now and I don't think he's the answer anymore. I don't think he's that go-to guy that you can trust week in and week out to give you a high level of performance. I think he makes too many mistakes sometimes.

“I'm sure they paid him a lot of money and trying to get that back will be difficult, but I understand why they are now in the market and want to be strengthened.”

With Emerson's departure looming, Spurs are focused on finding new defensive talent to bolster their squad next season.
