KEYSHAWN Davis continues his ascent to world titles with a 10-round bout against Miguel Madueño in Newark tonight. Sharing a card with Shakur Stevenson is all part of the great appeal of the fight for a guy who covers 135 heavy hitters and the surrounding areas.
“It's always special to share a card with my brother Shakur. We have been doing this since we were young. We have been talking about this since we were students. Brick City loves me. “This is the third time I've come here, so I expect the fans to go crazy again as I enter the ring,” said Davis.
Tensions have been rising between Keyshawn and Teofimo Lopez lately. Lopez (see above, defeating Claggett) successfully defended his WBO super-lightweight title with a points win over Steve Claggett in Florida and is in desperate need of an opponent to inspire him.
In an ongoing beef that has escalated from whispered discussions on the press stairs to full-on screaming sessions, the Top Rank couple seem fit to fight the future.
“I have to do what I was doing. I need to get out there, have fun and entertain,” explained Keyshawn, who is focused solely on tonight's opponent.
“He [Madueño] it has a style that I have seen many times, especially among the uneducated. When you go overseas you fight a lot of guys like that. Now that we've gone 10 rounds, I can take my time and operate on this kid. I'm going to go in there and have fun and do what I do.”
All this speculation about the next fight will disappear if Davis can first face Miguel Madueño, 25, a native of Sinaloa, who has 28 KOs from 31 wins (against two defeats) and comes with the appropriate nickname 'Explosivo'.
“This is a great opportunity,” Madueño said. “It's an opportunity to show what we're made of. We had some problems. But we are ready to get back on track. And what's better than dealing with a name like Keyshawn. “
Madeño lost to Steve Claggett two fights ago, which probably shows his quality.
