Leicestershire's Scott Wormleighton won the English Mid-Amateur Open Stroke Play Championship after shooting a final round 69 at Orsett Golf Club in Essex.
The Rothley Park golfer's 3-under-par total of 213 over 54 holes was enough to beat last year's champion David Corben by three shots.
First played in 1988, the English Mid-Amateur Open, also known as the Logan Trophy, is open to novice golfers aged 35 and over.
Wormleighton, who was the only player in the 129-strong field to finish in wet and windy conditions, said: “It feels amazing. Biggest win of my golf career. I had a good start with a birdie-birdie and I just tried to keep going from there by hitting more fairways. I just kept it playing well by hitting a lot of 2 irons to keep it on the fairway, and it made it a lot easier from there. After a long drive home I think I'll be celebrating with a few beers and a take away!”
Wormleighton, who was two shots behind American leader Joseph Deraney going into the final day, got off to a dream start when he birdied the first round. And things got even better as he birdied three of the first five holes.
Corben didn't get off to a good start with two bogeys, but fought back with birdies on 4 and 8 to keep him in the hunt, while Deraney's offense fell on the back-9 as five of his last six bogeys saw him finish. tied for 4th.
And while Corben tried to keep the pressure on Wormleighton, the 36-year-old held his own in the rain to win by three shots at -3 overall, finishing as the only player in the tournament under par.
Corben's three-round par 72 earned him second place, with 2022 champion Stuart Archibald (Test Valley) third on +2. Orsett's Shaun Mills had a great final day as five birdies helped him reach -1 to finish tied for fourth at +4, while another Orsett member, Jason Renton, had a good final day as an eagle and five birdies helped him . shoot for par.
Elsewhere Andy Grimwood (St Neots) again got five birdies in the round of -1 to push him to 6 as only three players finished under three on the day.
