4 young players to watch in Arsenal pre-season

The international summer competitions have come to an end which means that team football will soon be back.

However, England's teams will embark on an exciting pre-season tour before the Premier League kicks off, meaning young players will be given a chance to shine.

Arsenal travel to the United States in July, first facing Bournemouth before taking on rivals Manchester United. A clash with Liverpool is expected to follow before the Gunners return to north London to face German champions Bayer Leverkusen. Their pre-season will end on August 11 when they will host French side Lyon at the Emirates.

So what new prospects should fans be on the lookout for this summer?

Ethan Nwaneri

17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri has been tearing up the Premier League 2, making sure his name reaches Arsenal's first team. The midfielder made 21 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring 18 goals.

He even featured in Mikel Arteta's side when the Gunners faced West Ham in February, making his second Premier League appearance.

Nwaneri has started well in pre-season friendlies, scoring in Arsenal Under-21s' 4-2 win against Boreham Wood on Saturday afternoon.

Having been left out of the squad to face Enfield Town on Tuesday, the youngster is expected to travel with the first team to the US this summer. There is no doubt that his recent performances deserve praise and it won't be long before Nwaneri claims a place alongside the best.

Max Dowman has caught the eye of many in English football and, at just 14 years of age, is poised to become one of the country's most exciting players.

All eyes need to be on this young man as he develops at Arsenal. The club, well aware of his abilities, have gone so far as to assign the midfielder an official club number – a rarity for an Under-15 player.

Dowman has played for the Under 18 team, trained with the first team and even represented England at Under 17. He is very good and could be the youngest player in the Premier League to be given a chance next season.

Yes, there is a lot of pressure on his shoulders, but if Dowman can handle it he may have signs of becoming a true superstar.

Myles Lewis-Skelly has impressed through Arsenal's youth ranks and continues to search for first-team success.

The midfielder made 22 appearances in the 2023/24 season but was on the bench when Arsenal beat Lens 6-0 in the Champions League. He was given a similar opportunity against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League and, although he didn't get a chance to play, making the matchday squad is a clear sign of good things to come.

The 17-year-old is one of the players likely to travel with the team to the States, where he hopes to get a chance to play with some of the team's top players.

17-year-old Dan Casey has been on a big journey at Arsenal, starting at their pre-school before earning a scholarship to London Colney. An attacking midfielder who can be used in a variety of situations, he boasts the ability to play in midfield and midfield.

Arsenal's Under-21s lost to Enfield Town on Tuesday, but the best came from Casey, who produced a stunning strike to score the team's only goal of the game.

Casey has stepped up if teammates are willing to leave, which is a skill he will need to develop if he wants to break into the first team.

He took the opportunity to move up to the Under-21 team in his career, adding to the 11 games he played last season for the Under-18s.
