“We're not a racist country” – Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister breaks silence on latest racist row
Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has spoken out about the conflict in Argentina's squad following their Copa America victory.
The focus shifted from Argentina's victory to the storm of criticism surrounding a video that went viral, showing players, including Enzo Fernández, singing a controversial song targeting the French team and its players of African heritage.
As soon as it went viral, it was met with a strong backlash. Chelsea's French defender, Wesley Fofana, shared the video on social media and called it racist.
Enzo has received a lot of heat so far due to his prominence in the video and the reaction of the Chelsea players. A few players ended up unfollowing him on Instagram as well.
The midfielder issued an apology for his behavior. In his Instagram story, Fernandez said:
“I want to apologize profusely for the video posted on my Instagram channel during the national team celebrations. The song contains very bad language and there is no excuse for these words.
I am against discrimination in all forms and I apologize for getting caught up in the excitement of our Copa America celebrations. That video, at that moment, those words, do not reflect my character or my beliefs. I am truly sorry.”

Alexis Mac Allister discusses the latest controversy surrounding his teammates
Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister, who was apparently among the few players who did not participate in the dispute, has commented on the matter.
Speaking to UrbanPlayFM, he said (as translated by AlbicelesteTalk):
“You have to be careful what you say or do, especially in Europe where they are more sensitive than here. The truth is that we are not a racist country; we don't usually talk about such racism.
“Yes, it is a very important topic, obviously. Enzo has apologized and explained what happened. I don't think there is much more to say. We know Enzo, we know he would never do it with bad intentions, he is not that guy, he is not racist.
“It's just a song that got stuck and has more of a mocking tone than anything else. But, like I said, you have to be very careful.
“I think the most important thing is that Enzo came out, apologized for the same, and that, finally, it should be known.”
