NHL Rumors: Utah Hockey Club, Washington Capitals, and Boston Bruins

Where Victor Soderstrom is playing next year is unknown at this time

Craig Morgan: Heard that Utah's Victor Soderstrom may have changed agencies and left Quartexx Hockey. (Puck Pedia still has him listed with Darren Farris of Quartexx Hockey)

Utah is open to re-signing the RFA forward but is also open to exploring the trade market for an early first-round pick (2019).

There is also the thought that he may decide to play in Europe next season.

NHL news: Buffalo Sabres, Nashville Predators, NY Islanders, and San Jose Sharks

Dan Rosen of NHL.com: (mailbag) Washington Capitals Nicklas Backstrom will be on LTIR again, and possibly TJ Oshie. Evgeni Kuznetsov terminating his contract (with the Carolina Hurricanes) earned the Capitals an additional $3.9 million in cap space. Patrik Laine remains on the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program and cannot be traded to the Capitals or anyone else while on the program.

The Capitals have room for a potential top six player and Laine should be another option with their extra cap space. They will need some clarification on his situation first. There is no top-six option in free agency but they could look for Laine or others on the trade market.

Jeremy Swayman could come in at $9 million

Dan Rosen of NHL.com: (mailbag) Depending on the timing, 25-year-old RFA Jeremy Swayman could earn more than $9 million in his next contract. An eight-year extension would be less than $9 million but a five- or six-year deal would be between $9-10 million.

Swayman's age and what he has already accomplished, finding comparisons is a bit different. Juuse Saros was 29 when he signed his eight-year, $7.74 million contract. Connor Hellebuyck was 30 years old when he signed his seven-year, $8.5 million contract. Thatcher Demko was 25 when she signed her five-year, $5 million deal but only had 30 wins under her belt. Andrei Vasilevskiy was 25 years old when he signed his eight-year, $9.5 million contract but was under the flat cap in 2019.
