Nesthy Petecio, the featherweight silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, began her quest to better that finish in strong fashion, defeating India's Jasmine in a unanimous decision in the 2024 women's 32kg round on Tuesday, July 30 at -Arena Paris. Nord.

Petecio, 32, from Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur in the Philippines scored a 30-27 victory on three cards, with the other two scoring 29-28 in his favor over Jasmine, who is ten years younger.

Petecio, who at 5'4” gave away five inches of height, didn't seem bothered by the difference, using his toes and upper rights to land a long southpaw. Petecio's speed was also a big asset, as he cut through the range and rushed to the body and went up top to finish the first.

With the result secured, Petecio danced from the end of the final round to the bell.

Petecio will return to action on Friday, when she faces France's Amina Zidani in the round of 16. Zidani, a 30-year-old boxer with a record of 5-0 (2 KOs), has won gold at the 2023 European Games. and bronze at that year's World Championships.

The joy from the Philippines' was somewhat dampened by the result of Eumir Marcial's 176-kilogram match in the 16th round, where he lost a unanimous decision to Uzbekistan's Turabek Khabibullaev. Marcial, a bronze medalist at the Tokyo Games, moved up to middleweight after his weight class was eliminated at the Olympiad, dropping a first-round unanimous decision as the tall Khabibullaev, also a southpaw, landed his punches early.

The fight became a stalemate in the second round as Marcial began to lose weight and pressure continued, while Khabibullaev landed left hands as Marcial came forward. Marcial continued to press in the third, landing big right hooks and left hands along the ropes, forcing Khabibullaev to hold to break the action.

The 20-year-old Khabibullaev will face Cuba's two-time gold medalist Arlen Lopez on Friday in the 80kg round of 16. Lopez, 31, advanced to the next round by defeating the Turkish team. Kaan Aykutsun.

Lopez is vying to become just the fourth boxer to win three gold medals at the Olympics.
