Caleb Plant-Trevor McCumby, Rolly Romero-Manuel Jaimes Added to Canelo-Berlanga PPV Undercard
The supporting cast is lined up as Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez embarks on a two-city press tour for his next outing.
Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) has revealed the full lineup for the September 14 Prime Video Pay-Per-View event from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 knockouts) will defend his RING/WBC/WBA/WBO 168-pound title against Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KO).
As previously reported by The Ring, former IBF super middleweight Caleb Plant will face unbeaten Trevor McCumby. Their first PPV fight will come with the interim WBA 168-pound title at stake.
Also on the show, former WBA 140-pound title holder Rolando Romero faces Manuel Jaimes from California. Their scheduled ten-round fight kicks off a four-fight PPV broadcast.
Erislandy Lara (30-3-3, 18 KOs) defends his WBA middleweight title against former two-division champion Danny Garcia (37-3, 21 KOs). Their bout scheduled for 12 rounds was already confirmed when Alvarez-Berlanga was first announced.
Plant-McCumby was previously slated to headline the Aug. 17 PBC at the Prime Video event in Orlando, Florida.
The free air show was canceled while McCumby received help during training camp. A deal is made to save the war, there is a safe home as both combatants fight on equal footing.
Plant (22-2, 13 KOs) has not fought since a tough loss to David Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) last March in Las Vegas. Benavidez, ranked No. 1 at 168, remains in the undisputed fight with Alvarez but will campaign at 175.
The same goes for David Morrell (11-0. 9 KOs), who fought and won at light heavyweight over the weekend. It opens the door for Plant to re-enter the title picture with a win in September.
“It feels good to be back. “I've had some time out of the ring but I've used it wisely,” said Plant, a Middle Tennessee native who is now based in Vegas. “I've been in the gym since last June… I did over 220 rounds last year. So, I feel sharper than ever. I've been slipping on the edge of my game. This is the best I have ever looked at and my most complete game ever.
“I think that speaks volumes for what I have left for myself to prove. I guarantee that on September 14th you will see the best Caleb Plant yet. All I can say is that he is going to have a great time.”
McCumby (28-0, 21 KOs) has an unblemished record but against limited opposition.
The undefeated 31-year-old from Glendale, Arizona previously recorded a first-round knockout of Donovan George. It was changed to a No-Contest, however, when McCumby tested positive for a banned substance after their Nov. 2016. The matter was on the table, they postponed the decision until the following September.
A nine-month hiatus followed, during which McCumby seriously considered retirement. He has had a change of heart and has won five in a row since returning in 2018. The biggest was in his most recent outing, a ten-round decision over Chris Pearson on a Jan. 31 of ProBox in Plant City, Florida.
“Sports are a reflection of life,” McCumby said of his desire to take on the fight. “I see Caleb Plant as a symbol of those who keep many down, now my job is to fight back,” said McCumby. “No matter what resources you can use against me, I will not sit down. I'm inspired by everyone who fights for themselves, and that's the mentality I bring to the game on September 14.”
Las Vegas' Romero (15-2, 13 KOs) is hitting his third straight home run. The latter didn't work out too well for the charismatic, knocked out in the eighth round by Isaac 'Pitbull' Cruz. Their pre-Easter affair at T-Mobile Arena ended Romero's ten-month WBA 140-pound title reign.
“Happy Easter everyone,” Romero said, picking up where he left off in March.
Jaimes (16-1-1, 11 KOs), who hails from California's Central Valley, has won four in a row. The 24-year-old from Stockton turned over former roster choice Jonathan Romero on July 13, four months after appointing Belmar Precario.
The fight will be his first outside of Tijuana or California, although he is determined to learn his roots given the Mexican Independence Day theme.
“I am very happy to be a part of this wonderful event during Mexican Independence weekend,” said Jaimes.
It is an honor to represent my parents' country of Michoacan, Mexico and my fans at 209 Stockton. Rolly will be the third world champion I have faced, so I feel ready for this stage.
I have put the WBC Youth World Championship belt on my waist. This fight will bring me closer to my goal of becoming a world champion.”
Alvarez, Berlanga, Lara and Garcia will be in New York on Monday and Los Angeles on Tuesday to officially announce the event.
