5:22 p.m.: The Dodgers announced Graterol's placement on the injured list this evening and cleared Grove to take his roster spot as expected. The team also announced that stoppage Miguel Rojas was activated on the injured list and designated hitter James Outman to make room for him on the active roster.
8:40am: Right-handed Dodgers Brusdar Graterol he was pulled from last night's game due to obvious pain and the team announced that he has a right hamstring strain. Manager Dave Roberts told the media after the game that the difficulty was Grade 3, the most difficult type. Roberts stopped short of saying that Graterol has been made official for a year but it looks like it will be. It has been brutal for Graterol himself, as he has missed most of the season. He missed the spring due to hip stiffness and swelling in his throwing shoulder and began the season on the disabled list with a shoulder problem. The shoulder swelling lingered long enough that he remained on IL until Monday. Last night he was making his big league debut of the year, throwing eight pitches before hurting himself. Now it looks like those eight home runs will be his major league career total for the 2024 season.
For a frame of reference, the Royals fielded an outfielder Kyle Isbell in IL on May 5 of last year with a Grade 2 hamstring strain and estimated his recovery time at about six weeks. He was reinstated on June 27, just seven weeks later. Every injury is a unique situation but it seems fair to expect a longer timeline than that, as the Graterol brand is high grade. There are more than six weeks left in the regular season now, so conditions seem to indicate that Graterol is done for the year. Maybe he can recover quickly and make an impact in October if the Dodgers make a long run, but even in that case, he'll have to convince the club that he's healthy enough to be better than someone already on the roster. .
It's a loss for the Dodger bullpen, as Graterol had been a mainstay of their relief group prior to this year. He made 171 club appearances in the 2020 to 2023 seasons with a 2.69 earned run average. His 18.9% strikeout rate during that time was low but he averaged a 5.5% walk rate and got batters to hit the ball at a whopping 62.5% clip. He was able to earn Roberts' trust enough to rack up 11 tackles and 38 catches.
The Dodgers already have relievers Ryan Brasier, Connor Brogdon, Blake Treinen again Michael Grove on the injured list. Graterol will be joining that group even though Grove may be brought back to take his roster spot, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times at X. The relief team has a collective 3.61 ERA which ranks them fifth in the league, so they should be. a successful team even without Graterol, but it's still not good when the usable arm goes down like this.
Graterol reached Super Two status after the 2022 season and is therefore in its second of four seasons of arbitration. He made $1.225MM last year and will make $2.7MM here in 2024. With this season almost completely washed out, he will likely earn the same salary in 2025. He will be eligible again in 2026 and is scheduled to become a free agent after that season.
