Marlins Want Xzavion Curry To Fire Rangers

The Marlins wanted a right-hander Xzavion Curry with no exception to the Guardian, the parties announced on Friday. Cleveland designated Curry to work earlier in the week. To make room on the 40-man roster, Miami picked right Shaun Anderson by share.

Curry, who just turned 26 years old, was selected by the organization in the seventh round in 2019. He made his major league debut in 2022 and is ranked the No. 22 prospect in the farm program by Baseball America. Despite that, however, he has yet to find much success in the majors. He's pitched 129 innings and posted a 4.53 ERA, including a solid 5.84 ERA in 24 2/3 innings this year. Curry has a solid 7.3% walk rate in the majors but a low 15.2% strikeout rate. He's seen both his 92-93 mph fastball and his curveball hit hard by big leaguers – especially the latter (.321/.355/.607).

He didn't perform well in Triple-A, but Curry has had solid numbers all the way up to Double-A, has good command of the strike zone and is in the second of three major league options. He'll give Miami some length in the bullpen or an option to slot into a rotation decimated by multiple injuries and a southpaw deadline trade Trevor Rogers.

Miami acquired Anderson, 29, in a trade with the Rangers in May. He's been up and down a few times with the Fish but has been tagged with 13 bad runs in just 10 2/3 innings. The well-traveled righty fared much better in Triple-A this season, averaging a 2.42 ERA and 45-to-11 K/BB in 48 1/3 frames. The Marlins are Anderson's seventh major league club. He pitched 149 2/3 innings in the majors but struggled to a 6.19 ERA during that time. Anderson has a good record in Triple-A (3.66 ERA, 20.7 K%, 7.4 BB% in six seasons) but hasn't been able to translate that to the big leagues thus far.

Now that the trade deadline has passed, Anderson will either be sidelined or released next week.
