Manchester City 1-1 Manchester United (7-6 on pens)

Manchester City and Pep Guardiola got their campaign off to a good start by defeating rivals Manchester United in the Community Shield.

Sunshine poured into Wembley Stadium on a sunny Saturday afternoon, but it was not a game to remember.

There were no shots on target in the first 75 minutes of the match, with the champions resting a number of their key players.

United had the better chances, with Scott McTominay missing the most notable chance in the second half.

The likes of Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire were on the pitch for the Red Devils, but they struggled to make an impact in the opener.

After 70 minutes, things kicked into gear.

Man Utd took the lead late on through Alejandro Garnacho, who headed into the far corner for what looked to be the winner.

But in typical City fashion, they fought back to draw things back late on.

Substitute Bernardo Silva came on and managed to beat Andre Onana with two minutes to go.

As there is no extra time in the Community Shield, the tie will be decided by penalties.

The players headed to the final full of United fans, and it made all the difference to the FA Cup holders.

Silva, City's goalscorer, stepped up first but saw his effort saved by Onana.

Bruno Fernandes, Garnacho and Diogo Dalot were all denied by Jadon Sancho's strong hand.

New signing Savinho then scored for City, as did Casemiro and Ederson himself.

The goals kept coming and it wasn't until Jonny Evans missed for United that the game was finally over.

Manuel Akanji – who missed out against England at Euro 2024 this summer – stepped up and criticized the penalty that decided to spark celebrations at the end of the sky.
