NHL Rumors: New York Islanders, and Pittsburgh Penguins

New York Islanders GM on two free agents, two pending UFAs, and Oliver Wahlstrom

Arthur Staple of the Athletic: New York Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello to free agents Matt Martin and Cal Clutterbuck.

“The door is not closed to any player who has been in this organization for many years. They know the situation we are in; contact them. In terms of plans going forward, it is not the same as at the end of (last) year for us.”

Lamoriello was asked about striker Oliver Wahlstrom, who was a former RFA and signed a one-year deal, and if he is part of their future.

NHL Rumors: Could Patrik Laine Make Sense With Minnesota Wild?

“… if this is an indication (of) where his determination is, he will be given every opportunity. He is currently with us. That's how I look at it until something comes up. He will make that decision by the way he plays, like all the other players.”

Lamoriello said there is no rush for starters Brock Nelson and Kyle Palmieri, who are both entering the final year of their contracts.

What will the Pittsburgh Penguins decide to do with their remaining salary cap space?

Dan Kingerski of Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Pittsburgh Penguins have just over $2.7 million in projected salary cap space and that number could grow depending on who they send to the AHL and if forward Matt Nieto goes LTIR. They would have about $3.5 million in cash to spend.

Sources say Marcus Pettersson's extension talks are on hold pending Sidney Crosby's extension.

The Penguins won't be getting a free agent left tackle on the top line. GM Kyle Dubas may accumulate cap space at the trade deadline. Don't expect Dubas to spend $3.4 million in free agency or make a big trade. The Patrik Laine trade makes some sense though. Dubas will not trade futures.

NHL Rumors: Teams Will Want to Talk to Patrik Laine Before Trading Him

Given past comparisons like Kevin Hayes and second-round picks, Dubas could look to use the player's cap space and draft picks.
