Trae Young Talks About Dejounte Murray Partnership Going Wrong

The Trae Young-Dejounte Murray experiment lasted only two seasons before the Atlanta Hawks decided to trade Murray to New Orleans.

Now, Young has opened up about the failed relationship during an appearance on Podcast P with Paul George.

“We're not the first two that can't work and we won't be the last,” Young told George. “It didn't go well in court. And it sucks. We both agreed it was bad and that's part of the game. If it doesn't work, teams have to figure out what to do next and make a move.

“â€ĶI think it was difficult because we both don't think about ourselves in many ways. There were times early on when I was just there, I passed him and he wanted to be aggressive, but he is also a guard. So he doesn't always think of points first. But when I'm on the court, sometimes he's a shooting guard… So it's like the combination of the genre didn't work.

“And on paper, you might think it was possible because in San Antonio, he's a great defender, known as a defender, he wasn't really known as a scorer, put other guys in. But when he comes to us, it's just a different, different feeling. And so, I mean, it's just a challenge. It didn't work.”

Young added that he and Murray will always have a close relationship on the court.

“…The good thing is that we have lifelong relationships,” he said. “Since our relationship goes beyond basketball. We are both family men. Our behavior is very similar to who we are with, what we try to do in our daily life, everything. We just try to do everything for others and stuff like that. The way we get along outside the court is forever.”

In their two seasons together, Young and Murray won 41 and 36 games.

They lost to the Boston Celtics in the first round of the playoffs at the end of their first year together, and missed the playoffs in their second year.

Murray was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans on July 6 in exchange for Dyson Daniels, EJ Liddell, Larry Nance Jr., Cody Zeller and two first-round draft picks.
