Astros Designate Jacob Amaya for Assignment

The Astros announced a set of moves this afternoon, including news of that outfielder Jacob Amaya selected for assignment. This opens up a 40-man roster spot Hector Neriswho signed with Houston two days ago. Right-handed Seth Martinez again Shawn Dube optioned to Triple-A to create a 26-man roster spot for Neris and rightfully so Caleb Ortwho was restored to the father's list.

Amaya came to the Astros in a trade from the Marlins back in April, and the 25-year-old's time on the Houston roster has included just one game — an appearance as a defensive reliever in the Astros' 10-3 run. loss to the Yankees on May 7. At the Triple-A level this season, Amaya has a slash line of .221/.308/.330 over a total of 302 plate appearances with the Astros' and Marlins' top affiliates.

This represents a step back from the more respectable numbers Amaya posted in Triple-A (with the Marlins last season and the Dodgers in 2022). Amaya has been considered a glove-first player since his time in the Los Angeles farm system, and while his defense alone may be good enough to earn him consideration for the big league roster, he will need to deliver. too much on the plate to get anything more than the occasional call or playing time.

Finding a niche in Houston is especially tricky for Amaya when you think about how Jose Altuve again Jeremy Pena they had the midfield positions in the lockdown, and the superutilityman Mauricio Dubon it bounces around in different places. This is the first time Amaya has been selected for assignment, so if he clears waivers and is headed to Triple-A, he doesn't have the exact time or MLB service required to decline that assignment in favor of free agency.
