Collin Morikawa made a golf change to help acclimate to the altitude at Castle Pines Golf Club, home of the 2024 BMW Championship.
Morikawa opted to switch out his standard TaylorMade TP5x balls for the TP5 variant.
This is done in order to achieve greater control over the ball given the improved flight achieved at altitude.
Morikawa has been using a low-spinning TaylorMade TP5x golf ball through 2024, but is switching to the high-spinning TP5 model in Colorado at Castle Sands.
Morikawa has experience with TP5, having used it for about four years earlier in his career. Since then, he's switched to the slow-spinning TP5x, although he's not new to the TP5.
During Monday's practice at Castle Pines, Morikawa noticed that his normal flight of the ball was a little off. Because of the height, the ball traveled a long way, but he was not happy about flying.
“(I'm thinking) going to TP5,” Morikawa said on the show earlier in the week (the switch has been confirmed).
“Look, in my first three-and-a-half to four years, I played TP5, and I also played the spinner ball. I found the (TP5x) best suited for windows. (With TP5x) I was staying on the low end of the spin, but I just noticed with my swing, it's moving on the low end. We are at 6,000 feet, lots of elevation changes. If I hit some of these balls with low spin, it's not going to look like a good flight.
“I am discussing returning to the spinner ball. It's something I've played for a while, so it can be a change, but it's something I think I can be comfortable with.”
Morikawa was asked if he thought the TP5's greater spin than the TP5x would hurt his game around the greens. He didn't seem to care.
“I think the balls are so similar on the green that it doesn't even matter,” Morikawa said. Both get around the greens very well, you get spin and wedges, they come out well.
“The only thing with the X-ball compared to the TP5 would be a little different. IX presents a high mark, which would be good, but if I don't have spin, it's that balance that's trying to figure out where that is.”
Morikawa will enter the BMW Championship ranked fourth in the FedEx Cup standings.
