Former two-division champion Marlon Tapales returns to action on September 7 when he takes on former Indian boxer Saurabh Kumar at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Tapales (38-4, 20 knockouts) will be fighting for the second time since losing by knockout in the tenth round last December to Naoya Inoue in an uncontested junior featherweight title fight. The 32-year-old Tapales from Lanao del Norte province in the Philippines made a brief return to the ring in May, knocking out Mattapong Jankaew in the first round in Manila.
Kumar (11-1, 6 KOs) takes a big step into the ten rounds, having fought just once before outside of his native India. In that fight, against Zhong Liu in China last year, Kumar was stopped in seven rounds for the WBO regional belt. Since then, Kumar, 28, has taken apart a boxer with a 2-1 record and stopped Shivam Sharma, who entered with a 0-1 record, in the fourth round.
“I am happy to fight in the great country of Cambodia and I am happy to give them a good show,” said Tapales, who is promoted by Sanman Boxing and MP Promotions, in a statement.
“It will be a good experience to fight for his job. A plan for him to work, maybe one more [fight] before the end of the year. I hope that in 2025 we will get the title again and become world champions three times,” said Jim Claude Manangquil of Sanman Boxing.
The event will be promoted by KKIF and Wurkz Energy Drink.
