“Now that's a wish” – Spurs podcaster likes Romano's deadline day update

Spurs fans have been left stunned by Fabrizio Romano's report that Tottenham Hotspur have no intention of selling Giovani Lo Celso before Friday's transfer deadline.

Tottenham transfer news

The Lilywhites have endured a tough summer of business, removing any deadwood from Ange Postecoglou's squad and welcoming the likes of Dominic Solanke and, most recently, Wilson Odobert from Burnley. The two attacking additions should help add much-needed depth to the current Spurs side, who will no doubt be chasing their first Champions League title under their Australian manager.

Their specification, meanwhile, will continue with the sale of Lo Celso. The midfielder looks set to complete a move away from North London following a previous loan spell at Villarreal. In the end, things did not work out for the Argentine at Spurs, regardless of the manager. Clearly a talented midfielder given his form in Spain, Lo Celso will join a long list of players questioning what could have been.

The Lilywhites will at least benefit from the deal, however. According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham have reached an agreement to sell Lo Celso to Real Betis but have also secured an initial deal to sign Johnny Cardoso from the Spanish outfit if they want to in the future. Not only that, Spurs will receive a percentage of any future sale of the United States defensive midfielder even if they choose not to pursue him themselves.

Reacting to the news, podcaster Ben Bowman praised the Spurs, saying “now that's ambitious” in response to Romano's tweet. Although there are problems in the agreement, and it remains to be seen if Cardoso one day becomes a Spurs player, those in North London seemed to have a chance to win.

If Cardoso does improve, then Spurs will automatically be first in line to sign off on a deal that has already been wrapped up. If they decide against signing the American, they will benefit financially from the sale of Real Betis.

Tottenham would be wise to revisit “tough” Cardoso

While it looks like Cardoso will remain a Real Betis player at this point, he is a player that Spurs should revisit in January or next summer, using their position in the cooler to their advantage.

At just 22 years old, the defensive midfielder has already earned plenty of plaudits, including from commentator Ben Mattinson, who described Cardoso as a “tough player” and “calm under pressure” two traits that all top midfielders should possess in abundance.

The future midfield duo of Archie Gray and Cardoso is mouth-watering enough hope for all Spurs fans, including Bowman it seems.
