Phil Foden doubts England job after fitness

Phil Foden could miss England's upcoming UEFA Nations League games after suffering a hamstring injury that kept him out Manchester City won 3-1 against West Ham on Saturday.

The Premier League champions won at the London Stadium thanks to Erling Haaland's hat-trick. The Hammers conceded just one goal all game to deny Ederson a clean sheet, though it did come through a goal from Ruben Dias.

But City were without one of their star strikers again, with Foden forced to miss the game through illness. His inability to get into team games has raised doubts about whether he will be able to feature in the England games in September – despite being called up to Lee Carsley's squad.

Pep Guardiola is hoping to return to action after the international break, but could not give much on the midfielder's fitness timeline.

“I hope not [too long]. I hope that after the international break he will be ready,” he told reporters. “He played against Chelsea for 45 minutes but after that he didn't feel well. He's been tested and feels much better, but he still doesn't feel perfect.

“I prefer us [have] that time for him to recover and live and after that, come back after the international break and be ready for those games. “

Foden has so far played just 45 minutes of his club's 2024/25 campaign, missing out on wins over Ipswich Town and West Ham. If he is to return after the upcoming break, he will be part of the squad to host Brentford on September 14.

Meanwhile, interim manager Carsley will lead the Three Lions in double headers against the Republic of Ireland and Finland on 7 and 10 September. Foden was among the names listed in the head coach's first team, but he may be forced to miss out if he cannot return to fitness.
