NHL Rumors: Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres
Dennis Bernstein: “Here's my last one for you. Okay, October 1, 2025, let's say that's opening night. Okay, what jersey is Mitchell Marner wearing?”
Dave Pagnotta: “It still has to be Toronto.”
Bernstein: “Okay?”
Pagnotta: “Because I mean, you get denied, especially in Toronto, a lot. And who was it, was it MacKinnon? Someone came to protect him.”
Bernstein: “It was MacKinnon”
Pagnotta: “It's just to emphasize how good the player is when you see him outside the market. He's beautiful, he's amazing.”
Mick Kern: “Outstanding.”
NHL Rumors: Where Things Are with Mitch Marner and the Toronto Maple Leafs
Pagnotta: “His last three seasons, he was beaten or topped 90 points in those seasons. He was fast last year. I think he will complete his century this season. By the way, if he is healthy, I think he scores over 100 points. You will be paid. It will really come down, I think, to how much the Leafs feel, they can add and close around Matthews and Marner and stuff.
Tavares is up after the next, postseason again. If that money stays, it will go down a lot. He has Marner's money. It's just a matter of pushing that off the table. I think now, because the Leafs are waiting, and they've had discussions, and they're talking to other clubs about moving him and what that would look like, and this and that.
And I think they had a good idea of where Marner would accept to move. But since camp starts next week, I think for now you'll have to wait and see what you have. No Marners just grow on trees. So I think even the way I thought, it has changed because at the beginning of the summer, I thought they were definitely going to go down that way. They definitely had those conversations.
NHL Rumors: Mitch Marner Will Be Playing Like He Wants To Be Big
I'm just thinking now, I think it's a wait and see mode, and both sides seem to be fine with that. The only thing I will say, the one caveat I will say, is that his agent, who has past clients if you don't get a deal and you talk, you're going to go into a year of talking. If you don't get a deal done at the start of the regular season, you really push that negotiations are closed until, Darren Ferris, until the end of the season, that team's season.
I have no problem with it. I think that is probably the right place, and there is no interference. And you say it once, and that's it. But they still have a month or so to decide if they want to go down that road.
But I'm starting, I've started to lean more towards DB towards Mitch I stick around. But they better pay them. And it will be 13. 12, let's say a minimum of $12 (million) a year.”
