Jon Rahm looks unlikely to play for the European team in the next Ryder Cup as he refuses to pay his DP World Tour fine.
The DP World Tour has handed out one-tournament bans and £100,000 financial penalties to members who compete in tournaments without exemptions.
While it's thought that Rahm has enough vacant weeks on his calendar to accept one-week fines, he doesn't seem interested in paying the fines.
“I'm not a big fan of the penalty,” Rahm said at an individual tournament at LIV Golf near Chicago.
“I think I have been open about that. I am not willing to pay the fines, and we keep trying to negotiate with them [the DPWT] about how we can make this happen. I've said it many times, I don't go to the Spanish Open for fame or anything else. I think it is my duty to be there for Spanish golf, and I want to play in Sotogrande.
“At that time, it would have been almost impossible not only for me but also for Spanish golf not to allow me to play. So yes, that's why we're trying to talk to them and make that happen. I would also like to play Dunhill [Links Championship]. I have a good friend who asked me to play, and Johan has been a great ambassador for the game of golf. I would love to be able to play all those events.”
Rahm now faces a situation where the rules are the rules. However, it is not entirely hopeless.
Tyrrell Hatton, Rahm's Legion 13 teammate, faced a similar battle but was allowed to play without a penalty because he appealed the penalties, taking advantage of the middle-of-the-road, mysterious penalty seat that allowed Hatton to compete. Betfred British Masters earlier this month.
The same thing will allow him to play the events Rahm is looking to enter later this month. However, Hatton sought relief on appeal while Rahm has yet to file a claim.
“I think it's not just that I have to play those three, but I want to play those events,” Rahm said.
“They are exciting. My last experience at Dunhill I didn't play well, so maybe I'll get a little redemption, although being the fourth week in a row after having a baby might be a little too much, because of the weather in Scotland especially and Carnoustie. . But I'm still looking forward to some fun golf.”
