There is one undisputedly great golf course on the Welsh coast (Royal Porthcawl), many excellent ones (Royal St David's, Pennard, Ashburnham, Southerndown, Pyle & Kenfig, Tenby), one spectacular (Nefyn), and one that does anyone. you played it smiling unconditionally – Aberdovey.
Located in mid-Wales, north of the Dovey Estuary, it is a beautiful links course with charm and beauty to ensure a great day of golf.
The early and late holes are accompanied by a dune complex that can make even the most inexperienced golfer swoon.
The most famous of these is the short par-4 16th which is widely praised as the best of its kind in Wales (and deserves to be included in the discussion about such a list from afar).
At 285 yards from the back tee it's an inviting opportunity for big hitters – and short hitters if the wind is at your back or the turf is particularly dry – but the threats are significant.
In short, this risk and reward at the very, very best.
The hole moves from right to left and in doing so follows the same track as the train that runs parallel to it. Anything wider to the left of the fairway risks getting out of bounds (and maybe 13:31 to Birmingham New Street).
But down to the right are high dunes, tall grass and three sand dunes.
A more conservative option is to play the mid-range instrument in a wider setting, but that still leaves the tone deceptively green.
If the attack option finds the right line it can still be kicked left by the dunes created by the sea and nature.
The best and best test offers golfers and golfers alike plenty of options.
The Par-4 2nd hole is also outstanding
All the (deserved) praise for Aberdovey's 16 means that the second is sometimes overlooked.
It goes in the opposite direction and deep into the dunes, with a tee box at the top of a sand hill.
Measuring 332 yards it is longer than the 16th but downhill is another putt that can be attacked with the first shot.
There is a narrow lane to navigate with three bunkers a threat to the right and high dunes a challenge to the left.
Like the 16, advanced and intermediate golfers will always enjoy this test.
Aberdovey GC enjoys something of a mild climate that makes it not only a great day out in summer, it's also a great winter golf course.
And with the train station just yards from the pro shop, you can also take the train there.
