Former NFL QB Tony Romo has long been one of golf's most popular celebrities, although that name may be selling his game short. He won the American Century Championship, a celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe Resort, three times, and in 2023 he met University of Texas player Tommy Morrison and qualified for the US Amateur Four-Ball.
He played the pre-qualifying stage of the PGA Tour Q School for the past three years (as recently as last month), was invited to the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship of the PGA Tour in 2018 (he missed the cut) and made a few Korn Ferry. The journey begins.
The QB-turned-CBS analyst is a golf nut. Just ask one of his regular partners in the Dallas, Texas, area: Scottie Scheffler.
“The way his body is, playing for so many years in the NFL, he fights every day,” said Scheffler, a guest on this week's Subpar podcast. “He brings this little Hypervolt and his lacrosse ball and his bands to the golf course with him every day and he's actually warming up every round, so I think it's against his body. Because he is a really good golfer. If his body can cooperate with him I think he can be very good. But it's hard for him to be beaten for so many years playing in the NFL. I mean, he plays golf every day when he's at home. He plays golf all the time — he loves it.”
They also play many cash games together. And Scheffler explained one way he likes to annoy his friend.
“Tony is always at risk in the game. Therefore, if it plays well, it wins and if it plays badly, it loses a lot because it has side games with everyone, and the wolf never rejects the hammer; he's a crazy man,” Scheffler said. “So if he loses, he loses a lot because if we play well, we will make a lot of birdies and bet again and do all that stuff, and there have been a few times where he has played and written for the boys. And I never go to the bank, so I just keep it in my little purse and whenever I have to pay him, let's say he owes me $1,000, so he writes me a check for $1,000. Then the next week I lose $600, give him a check and say, 'Okay, you owe me $400.' [Laughs]
“It's really fun because he's crazy,” Scheffler continued. He says, 'This is not real money! This is wrong!' I'm like, 'Tony, of course yours name on the check. This is what you gave me. I'll give it back to you now.'”
Scheffler, however, said he's currently out of hidden checks for Romo.
