The 2024 golf season saw the resurgence of fan favorite Andrew “Beef” Johnston, and we're all the better for it. Look no further than a recent interview with the DP World Tour, where Beef shared an epic tale of trying to drink golf (and drinking) legend John Daly.

Johnston burst onto the scene in 2016, when his first win at the Open de Espana started a string of hot streaks, leading to his first PGA Tour card in 2017. The Englishman quickly endeared himself to golf fans thanks to his easy humor and likability. humanity.

A combination of injuries and poor performance kept Beef out of the public eye for a few years, but 2024 saw him re-enter the top 100 in the Race to Dubai rankings. He had his best result in a long time at the Omega European Masters in July, where he finished in solo third place.

On Tuesday, DP World Tour released a lengthy interview with Johnston on YouTube as part of their “Life on Tour” series with host George Harper Jr. and John E. Morgan.

And at the end of the sit-down, Beef got to the good stuff. When asked if he had any good Daly stories to share, he offered one year.

The incident happened a few years ago at the Turkish Airlines Open, where Beef met Daly for the first time. After Sunday's final round, two of the greatest golfers met for a beer, and it quickly turned into a serious drinking show, as Johnston recounted in an interview.

“We had a conversation and I was drinking beer, and he said, 'we're going to get a bucket of these beers.' And obviously he was talking about whiskey,” Johnston said. “He was like 'look, go back to the hotel and you'll meet me and we'll continue.'”

It was when the two professional golfers met later that the adventure began to unfold, thanks in no small part to the full glasses of whiskey Daly had ordered for them.

“I remember sitting there… and he ordered like two large whiskeys. And a coke can on the side. As the waiter sat down, [Daly] you go, 'can we order two more?'”

A startled Johnston replied, “Mate, they've just arrived!”

Trying to keep up with Daly finally got the best of Beef.

“The next thing, I'm in my pants, I'm shaking a tree, and I'm jumping in the pool, and I'm like, 'he looks good! I'm not, he seems fine!'” Beef explained.

“And I wake up and I'm like 'what's going on?' And my missus at the time was like, 'yeah you stripped down to your pants, and you were shaking this tree for some reason, and you jumped in the pool.'

When Beef asked what happened to Daly, he was told, unsurprisingly, that he was fine and had just returned to his hotel at the end of the night.
