The Oilers made moves due to McDavid's injury in the first half of their 6-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday (Oct 29). Head coach Kris Knoblauch told the media that McDavid will return to Edmonton for further evaluation of his lower back injury. Leaving the trip means McDavid is expected to miss Thursday's game against the Nashville Predators, while Edmonton will return to Alberta to face the Calgary Flames.
Caggiula, 30, had a great training camp with the Oilers but couldn't work his way back up the roster. He got off to a strong start in Bakersfield, scoring two goals and three assists in five games. Caggiula is a center but he can slot into the wing assuming all centers line up in McDavid's absence. He will likely go on the fourth line with Corey Perry and Mattias Janmark.
Philp is 26 years old coming off a one-year retirement. He had an amazing training camp with the Oilers, impressing with his two-way game and work ethic. Philp looked good enough to make the team out of training camp, but Edmonton wanted to get him more ice time in the pros after he retired.
