In Florida, there are a lot of big-name courses, and some are already in the works.
Dream Golf, developer of Bandon Dunes and Sand Valley, among other premier properties, announced it has received approval to move forward with Old Shores, a new golf development in the Florida Panhandle, backed by an 18-hole community course. Like other Dream Golf properties, Old Shores will put an A-list builder to work on the original site. Tom Doak was hired to design the course, on a sandy site, tasked with creating what Dream Golf's Michael Keizer said would be “a golf experience like the places we love in Scotland.”
“It's a prehistoric site that feels like it belongs to the world because of its uniqueness,” said Keizer. “Old Shores is designed to feel geographically mysterious – you can't really tell where you are. That helps create an interesting experience.”
The news comes amid a busy time for Keizer and his brother, Chris, who run the day-to-day operations of Dream Golf, the company that originated with his father, Bandon Dunes developer Mike Keizer. Under the guidance of the Keizer brothers, Dream Golf continued to add courses and facilities at Bandon Dunes on the Oregon coast, and Sand Valley in central Wisconsin, while starting two more resorts: Rodeo Dunes in Colorado, and Wild Spring Dunes in Texas, both under construction.
With a development plan recently given the green light by Washington County, Fla., Dream Golf can continue to build on its growing portfolio. The property is located approximately 30 miles north of the Panama City airport, easily accessible from Highway 30A, which runs along Florida's golf-rich Gulf Coast.
The construction timetable is yet to be announced. For more information, visit oldshores.com
