Edmonton Oilers' 1,000-Point Club: Gretzky, Kurri and Messier's Historic Moments – Hockey Writers – Edmonton Oilers

With his next goal or assist, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid will reach 1,000 NHL regular season points. After recording a goal and three assists in Edmonton's 4-3 overtime win over the New York Islanders on Tuesday (Nov. 12), McDavid sits at 999 points.

The 27-year-old will become the fourth youngest player to reach 1,000 points, behind only Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, and Steve Yzerman. McDavid, who has played 658 regular season games, will reach 1,000 points in the fourth few games, behind Gretzky, Lemieux, and Mike Bossy.

He will become the fourth player to record 1,000 points as a member of the Oilers, along with Gretzky, Jari Kurri, and Mark Messier. So with McDavid about to join Edmonton's 1,000-point club, here's a look back at what happened to one of the three members:

Wayne Gretzky

In Dec. 19, 1984, “The Great One” reached 1,000 points faster than anyone else in NHL history, a mark that still stands four decades later.

Edmonton hosted the Los Angeles Kings at Northlands Coliseum in Gretzky's 424th game.^th career game. Number 99 entered the game with 999 points and wasted little time pushing that total into the four-digit spot.

Just 1:41 into the first period, Gretzky fed Oilers forward Mike Krushelnyski, who put away Kings netminder Darren Eliot. Gretzky was credited with assisting on Krushelnyski's goal, which broke the record for few games to reach 1,000 points. The record was 720 games, held by Guy Lafleur.

Gretzky was just getting started that night. He went on to score two goals and pick up three more assists in a six-point night in a 7-4 win for the Oilers.

Jari Kurri

During Edmonton's first game in the 1990s, Kurri became the first Finnish player to record 1,000 points in an NHL regular season.

Kurri had amassed 997 points in 715 games when the Oilers took the ice in St. Louis. Louis Arena to face the St. Louis Blues on Jan. then he took his 999^th point with an assist from fellow Finn Esa Tikkanen at the start of the third period.

With the Oilers leading 5-4 with more than two minutes remaining, it looked like history could wait for another game. But Blues center Rick Meagher took a very sticky penalty.

In Edmonton's next game, Kurri passed to Tikkanen, who scored at exactly 18:00 of the third period to help his compatriot become the first player with 1,000 points in his country. It was the only Finnish finish in a 6-4 Oilers victory.

Mark Messier

Both Messier and Oilers teammate Glenn Anderson came to Edmonton's game against the Philadelphia Flyers at The Spectrum on Jan. 13, 1991, on the brink of an incredible milestone. Everyone will take their place in history in one game.

After receiving the puck from Messier, a running Anderson scored 5:25 into the third period, tying the game at 3-3. The assist gave Messier 1,000 career points, and the goal was Anderson's 400th.

Less than five minutes later, Messi and Anderson each assisted on Tikkanen's goal that put the Oilers ahead 4-3. At 19:01 of the third period, Tikkanen sealed the win for Edmonton with an empty-net goal, with Messier and Anderson again getting assists.

To date, Anderson, Gretzky and Kurri are the only players to score at least 400 points during the regular season in an Oilers uniform. Messier sits fourth in franchise history with 392 goals as an Oiler.

McDavid can join the 1,000-point club today (Nov. 14), when Edmonton hosts the Nashville Predators at Rogers Place. If that happens, he will become the first Oilers player to hit 1,000^th a work space on home ice since Gretzky nearly 40 years ago.

Otherwise, another of the NHL's historic achievements will take place in one of its historic cities: After hosting Nashville, the Oilers hit the road, where they will play the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday (Nov. 16) and the Montreal Canadiens on Monday (Nov. 18).
