The Italian, who withdrew last week before playing in the quarterfinals in Madrid due to an ongoing injury, announced the news on Saturday, telling X in his native Italian: “It's not easy to write this message but after talking to doctors and specialists about my hip problems I have to announce that unfortunately I won't be able to play in Rome.

“Obviously I'm sad that I didn't recover, it was one of my favorite tournaments. I couldn't wait to get back and play at home in front of the Italian crowd.”

Sinner had a great year on tour, winning her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, and compiling a 28-2 record with three titles overall. The 22-year-old became the first Italian man to win a major since 1976, and is the highest-ranked Italian man in history at world number 2.

He has joined his rival Carlos Alcaraz beside Rome. The Spaniard pulled out with a hamstring injury on Friday, leaving the world Nos. 2 and 3 as a big question mark as the second major of the year approaches.

The Roland-Garros main draw begins on May 26.
