Baker gets first win for new SkyCaddie PRO 5X – Golf News

SkyCaddie scored a “first-ever” victory for the PRO 5X Tour Book GPS distance, when Ryder Cup star Peter Baker won this weekend's Legends Tour opening event.

Baker's win means SkyCaddie users have won tournaments for the past six consecutive seasons on the Legends Tour – Europe's most prestigious golf circuit to allow the use of distance measuring devices.

England man Baker lifted the trophy at last weekend's Barbados Legends Championship hosted by Ian Woosnam, the first on the 2024 Legends Tour, after birdieing the first qualifying hole against Australian golfer Scott Hend – who also used a SkyCaddie GPS in between and competition.

Peter Baker has won four tournaments on the Legends Tour in 2023, en route to lifting last year's Order Of Merit trophy.

Baker's reign in 2023 meant that the last Order Of Merit winners on the Legends Tour all relied on SkyCaddie's accurate GPS yards to help them win – Peter Baker in 2023, James Kingston in 2022, Stephen Dodd in 2021 and Baker's colleague. Ryder Cup teammate Phillip Price in 2019.

“You can feel 100% that the new PRO 5X has incredible accuracy” says Baker, who splits his time between playing on the Legends Tour, and working at South Staffordshire Golf Club, near Wolverhampton. “It's very accurate, and the distances are fast. Whoever drew Apes Hill in Barbados for SkyCaddie did an incredible job! That course has a lot of different angles around the greens making your club selection difficult, but the SkyCaddie yardages were spot on every time”.

On the role of the SkyCaddie PRO 5X in his first win of the season, Baker said: “I'll be using the PRO 5X all season now. You can check it out for all your green distances and landing spots, and the carry and logistics can't be beat. The battery life is the best of any SkyCaddie I've used, and even when I'm playing in the USA where you can't use DMDs in tournaments I'll be checking the yardage book against the SkyCaddie numbers in practice rounds.”

75% of the Top Leaders in the final Order Of Merit for the 2023 Legends Tour were SkyCaddie GPS users. SkyCaddie's James Holmes said: “Last year SkyCaddie users won 11 of the 14 Legends Tour events, where DMDs could be used. Naturally we are delighted that Peter has continued his good form into 2024!

“This proves once again how important SkyCaddie has become to golfers playing at the highest level.

“A number of competitors have joined the Legends Tour for the first time in 2024, and we are looking forward to showing them all about the great operating benefits the SkyCaddie GPS device provides the player under high-pressure tournament conditions.”

SkyCaddie's official partnership with the Legends Tour Presented by Staysure comes after the company has spent several seasons developing close relationships with players and officials on Tour, proving the technology at multiple tournaments.

Legends Tour officials now use GPS yards positioned on the SkyCaddie map to create pin sheets when setting each day's pins, enabling competitors to download the day's accurate holes to their SkyCaddies, and receive a printed pin sheet for the day.

The SkyCaddie PRO 5X Tourbook was launched in February 2024, and retails for £399.95 including 12 months of SkyGolf 360 Birdie Membership.

SkyCaddie's more compact SX400 Tourbook, also used by Legends Tour competitors and many PGA professionals, is currently on offer for £100 off the RRP until Father's Day.
