Victor Wembanyama's thoughts on meeting Trae Young
Reports about Trae Young being linked to the Spurs are not new, but star player Victor Wembanyama is reportedly “impressed” with the idea of trading Young.
Wemby likes the idea of playing alongside Atlanta's guard in San Antonio, ESPN's Tim MacMahon he says.
“I will say that I've talked to people who know Wemby and they've expressed interest in the idea,” MacMahon said on Brian's Windhorst podcast. The Hoop Collective. “Now, being impressed by that idea and hitting the table are two very different things. I don't know if Gregg Popovich will be interested in this idea.”
Reports of Young being linked with Spurs first surfaced in February, however HoopsHypeMichael Scotto reported that the two sides were not close to closing the deal.
“Although some have published the idea of the Spurs trading Young in the media, league sources said the Hawks and the Spurs had no concrete discussions regarding this trade before the deadline,” said Scotto. “Time will tell in the coming months if that changes.”
After Sunday's draft lottery, the Hawks defied the odds and received the No. 1 pick in the lottery, while the Spurs will have the No. 4 and No. 8 picks.
League sources “doubt” the lottery has changed the odds of seeing Wembanyama and Young link up anytime soon, Scotto said.
In any case, the Hawks haven't played in the playoffs since 2021, so it's possible they'll break their core of Young and Dejounte Murray.
“There is a widespread belief among rival managers that the Hawks will dismantle their team and part with Trae Young or Dejounte Murray this offseason,” said Scotto. “In past years, there has been strong resistance to moving Young, but rival executives believe Atlanta will be more open to that conversation this offseason than ever before.”
Young is owed $89 million over the next two seasons and has a player option for $48.97 million through the 2026-27 season.
