Pep Guardiola's hilarious reaction to Sir Alex Ferguson's 'ssqueaky bum time'

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was left confused when asked if he was feeling the pressure of 'difficult times'.

The Cityzens head to Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night needing a win to overtake Arsenal at the top of the Premier League before the final day of the season.

In his pre-match press conference, it was pointed out to Guardiola that this period of the season was popularized by Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson as a 'difficult period'.

“Translate,” Guardiola said quickly in his press office before the room burst into laughter.

Some reporters then told Guardiola the meaning of the word, and the Spaniard continued: “Big pressure? Big pressure. Why didn't Sir Alex make a simple sentence?”

Finally asked if he was feeling the pressure of 'squeaky bum time', Guardiola replied: “Not now, no.”

Ferguson first coined the term in 2003 when his United team, like City now, faced Arsenal in the Premier League title race.

The Gunners were also in the midst of a successful FA Cup run, which saw them play in the semi-final at Old Trafford against Sheffield United.

Before Arsenal play Chelsea again in the quarter finals, Ferguson said: “They have a match against Chelsea and if they win they will face the semi final three days before they play us in the league.

“But they said they were going to win the treble, didn't they? and we have the experience now to deal with it.”

'Squeaky bum moment' was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2022, with its definition reading: “British colloquial (originally and especially in sporting contexts) a tense moment, eg leading up to the climax of a competition or event.

“This name was coined by Sir Alex Ferguson, who at the time was the manager of the Association Football club Manchester United, referring to his team challenging for this title at the end of the English Premier League.

“The term has been interpreted as a reference to the sound of someone fiddling restlessly in a plastic chair during the intense closing stages of a tournament.”
