NHL Rumors: Will New Jersey Devils and/or Buffalo Sabers Trade Their 1st Pick?

Could the New Jersey Devils trade their No. 1 overall pick? 10, three possible targets

James Nichols of New Jersey Hockey Now: There has been speculation that the New Jersey Devils should hold on to the No. 1 pick.

The Devils need a top six forward, with some help on the blue line and in net.

Mattias Samuelsson – It may take more than the 10th overall pick for the Buffalo Sabers to part with Samuelsson. He has six years remaining at $4.285 million per cap.

Shea Theodore – The Vegas Golden Knights have less than $1 million in cap space. Extending Noah Hanifin makes it easier to part with Theodore. He has one year left at $5.25 million and will be looking for a raise.

Jakob Chychrun – The defenseman for the Ottawa Senators has one year remaining at $4.6 million. He made a comeback after scoring 14 goals and 41 points last season.

Could the Buffalo Sabers trade the No. 1 pick? 11, another target

Lance Lysowski of Buffalo News: The Buffalo Sabers own the No. 11 pick in June's NHL draft, and should consider a trade. Coach Lindy Ruff said they are in 'win now' mode. The 11th overall pick isn't helping them anytime soon.

The Sabers need a third-line center and some grit and skill for the bottom two lines.

The Sabers have young players on their roster and more prospects on the way.

They'll have about $23.2 million in cap space, but the Sabers don't want to pay free agents to multi-year contracts. They will look to improve through trade and use some of their prospects. Matt Savoie, Isak Rosen and Jiri Kulich will impress the teams.

There are other teams that will be looking to shed salary this offseason and may be interested in draft picks. Vegas Golden Knights center Nicolas Roy has three years left on his contract and they may be looking for cap space to re-sign Jonathan Marchessault and Chandler Stephenson.

Could the former and the fantasy interest the Winnipeg Jets of Nikolaj Ehlers and Alex Iafallo? What about the first striker of St. Louis Blues Pavel Buchnevich? Columbus Blue Jackets Boone Jenner could be a good fit for the Sabres. No-trade clauses could be a problem for the Sabres.
