Berinchyk completes an unforgettable night in Ukraine defeating Navarrete to win the vacant WBO lightweight title.

RESULT: Ukraine is celebrating another boxing success tonight after Denys Berinchyk defeated Emanuel Navarrete by split decision to win the vacant WBO lightweight title. The scores were 115-113, 112-116, 116-112.

IMPORTANT TIMES: There were very few to write about. This fight was not organized with two styles that did not fall on the ground. Thankfully, in the last few laps a battle broke out.

RECORDS: Berinchyk went 19 without a loss to maintain his unbeaten record. Navarrete loses for the first time in 12 years and drops to 38-2-1 (31).

TALKING POINTS: The big talking point was Navarrete leaving super-featherweight to join the gang at lightweight. Tonight was not the 'Vaquero' we have been used to seeing for the past two years. Berinchyk made the Mexican useless, staying close and rarely caught by Navarrete's long arms.

QUOTABLE: With Gervonta Davis, Shakur Stevenson and Vasiliy Lomachenko the other three lightweight world champions Berinchyk was asked who he would like next. “Maybe Shakur Stevenson, maybe Keyshawn Davis, maybe [Raymond] Muratalla,” he replied.

A disappointed but respectful Navarrete focused on improving the future. “I got to this stage and I knew it was going to be difficult. Denys ran fast. I have a lot to improve on and that's what I plan to do. If I can continue to improve I can make noise in the lightweight division.”

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT: Berinchyk may come up against fellow Ukrainian Lomachenko but in the heavyweight division he will have no shortage of top opponents.

Navarrete must decide whether to continue at lightweight or move back to super-featherweight where he remains the WBO world champion.
