NHL rumors: Vegas Golden Knights, and Montreal Canadiens

The Vegas Golden Knights may not be able to keep any of their UFAs

David Pagnotta of the Fourth Season: The Vegas Golden Knights have less than $900,000 in salary cap space. They will receive $5 million in Robin Lehner's LTIR spot and could look to acquire another LTIR candidate.

The Golden Knights will not be returning pending UFAs Michael Amadio, William Carrier and Anthony Mantha next year. Defenseman Alec Martinez probably has no place. Forward Chandler Stephenson may have cost himself in Vegas.

Among the teams that may be interested in Stephenson are the Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes and Nashville Predators.

Jonathan Marchessault, 33, said last week to the AP that he had not heard of the Golden Knights. The Golden Knights would like to keep him.

NHL Rumors: Islanders, Kraken, Kings, Canucks, Maple Leafs, Golden Knights, and Lightning

The Montreal Canadiens may be ready to go after a big name right now

Eric Engels of Sportsnet: (mailbag) It seems possible that the Montreal Canadiens could trade their first-round pick from Winnipeg for a package to move up or a player who can help them now.

You don't see the Canadiens looking to sign a big-ticket agent to a big contract before the 2025-26 season. The Canadiens may be hesitant to say that Leon Draisaitl or Mikko Rantanen want to play in Montreal, but those two will be 30 and 29 when the 2025-26 season begins and will have a big cap hit.

Steven Stamkos is not a realistic option for the Canadiens or anyone other than the Tampa Bay Lightning this offseason. If things fall apart the Canadiens may be interested but may be looking for an immediate candidate.

I'm not sure the Canadiens are in a position to acquire a player like Sam Bennett, who is a year away from unrestricted free agency.

NHL Rumors: Montreal Canadiens Trade Targets, and San Jose Sharks Coaching Search

Defenseman Kaiden Guhle is entering the final year of his contract and may be looking at Alex Vlasic's contract with the Chicago Blackhawks – six years and $27.6 million.
